Unfortunately I've got some bad news to share. I have to take a bit of a hiatus from the blog. Work, life and health issues have ganged up on me and have left me with little to no time to read or keep up with the blog.

It could be a few months before I get back on track, but I do plan on getting back to blogging. It may be a little bit but I'll be back with an even better blog! I'd love it if all my wonderful followers would stick around, but understand if some of you can't.

See you soon!
Synopsis:

Tyler Karras is an honest man, a transplanted Brit living the American dream, but his charmed life takes an unexpected turn when his brother, Nick, is coerced into joining ranks with San Francisco’s Russian mafia. Ty intervenes to secure Nick’s freedom, yet only succeeds in incurring their wrath. With no choice but to accept Nick’s new life, Ty returns to his own, but his dreams are dashed when his wife—pregnant with their first child—is killed, the victim of a reckless crime.

Despondent and bitter, Ty macerates his grief in alcohol. From the depths of the bottle screams a voice, howling for vengeance. His target is a stranger, the woman who drew his wife toward her death. He doesn’t know her, but he’ll find her, and when he does, he will make her pay, for a deal has been struck with Nick’s Russian associates, enslaving her into a life of bondage. But as Ty moves forward in a cloud of alcohol, he mistakes the wrong woman for his intended victim and now all his plans have gone straight to hell.

With his eyes made clear by the stark reality of his mistake, Ty is driven, compelled by remorse and a relentless sense of guilt to make amends and protect Hannah Maguire, the innocent woman whose life he has derailed. He vows to keep her safe and out of the Russians’ hands, but they’re holding Nick as leverage to force Ty to complete their deal and turn over the girl. Once again, he must fight to free his brother, miring all three lives in further jeopardy. But Ty can’t do it all: Save the girl, his brother and his own soul. One of them must make the ultimate sacrifice.
I'd like to take a minute to thank Jason for taking time out of his busy schedule to write this review. He has been working hard on several music projects and if you'd like to learn more about them, click on the above links!

Ok, remember the fuss when the internet and the music world collided? New tech emerged, old formats fell by the wayside and we found new ways of doing things. Now just imagine the changes in the world that would erupt when the sciences of pharmacology and nanotechnology shacked up together and had some naughty fun.

This is the world of RX: A Tale of Electronegativity by Robert Brockway. Or more specifically, this is the intricately detailed vertical future city sprawl of Four Corners. A cyberpunk noir totem pole with the downtrodden cramped on the bottom below sea level, and the mind numbingly wealthy and powerful in glass cathedrals hanging high above the clouds.

This is also the world of Red, a small-time supplier of custom formulas of a gas called “Presence”, which gives the illusion of being in another time or place. One of his clients is Byron, a rich kid who is addicted to reliving the history of the 18th Century poet that shares his name. Another client is foul-mouthed “Factory Girl” QC, who Red helps occasionally with some gray market nanotech she uses in her work. Which is helping prepare and clean up after mass-hallucination Presence based anachronistic grudge matches like Abraham Lincoln vs. a Triceratops.

So when Byron and QC run into each other while looking for Red at his apartment around the same time that some heavily trained and equipped badasses go looking for Red at his apartment, they decide to try and find him and figure out what's going on. Good thing too, as Red wound up in the wrong lift, at the very bottom sub-level of Four corners, with a drug hangover, a circulatory system full of copy-written beta-test formulas, and absolutely no pants.

Brockway shoehorns a ton of detail about the environment he's created. From the clans in the tightly packed sub-levels, to the detailed effects of Presence trips, there are plenty of ideas for multiple novels weaved throughout the book. I only wish he spent as much time on the character development and dramatic pacing. The story bounces between Red's journey, and the journey of QC & Byron, when suddenly about three-fourths of the way in the perspective changes to characters that were never really part of the narrative at all. Took me a bit to realize it was the intruders at Red's place in the beginning of the novel, but dropping their narrative that late in the novel was jarring to say the least. As far as character development, there wasn't any. Byron was the useless rich kid junkie, and QC was a hard ass chick with a creative Tourettes streak. (The term f*cksquad, I actually want to catch on). And stayed that way until the end. Which it just kind of ended abruptly, without any satisfying conclusion. Red stumbled upon a MAJOR development in Presence tripping technology, and yet did NOTHING with it.

RX: A Tale of Electronegativity is an amazing feat of sci-fi world building, and I know there are some amazing stories happening in the sprawl of Four Corners, but sadly, not in this novel. Having innovative ideas is a great thing for a sci-fi novel. But so is a compelling story.

Jason's Rating: 2 and 1/2 nanotech eating pigs outta five.

Britthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00313662819792024355noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-243597321028727185.post-66467908117929493482013-03-01T15:40:00.001-05:002013-03-01T15:41:05.322-05:00Giveaway: Pandora's KeyHey guys, I haven't hosted a giveaway in quite some time and I'm WAY overdue. 'Leaves' is a story of love and loss, of family and friends and of the fluidity of relationships. The Gold children were raised in Oldham, CT, learning the ins and outs of small town life. They grew up in and helped their parents run The Sugar Maple Inn. Now that both of their parents are gone, the kids have decided it's time to sell the inn and move on. Before the sale goes through the family is going to throw one last huge Halloween bash, after all the Sugar Maple is famous for them. That is if they don't drive each other crazy first. They have always been a close family, has the loss of their parents and the pending sale of their childhood home changed that?

I was completely captivated by this story! The author does a wonderful job setting the scene in each of the locations, though most of the story does take place in Oldham. With his descriptions of the scenery, I really felt like I was there in the moment with the characters. The fact that Tyler, the youngest of the Gold children is a photographer by trade gave the author more room to be descriptive without overwhelming the reader. I will admit that after reading 'Leaves' I have added “Connecticut during Autumn” to my places I need to visit list.

In my notes, I referred to the story as a sampler platter. Throughout the book we are introduced to several characters the main ones being the Gold children, and the supporting cast their significant others, children, love interests, etc. Because there are so many characters to get familiar with, it felt like I didn't get to know them as well as if there had only been two main characters. That being said, I do think the author did a fantastic job developing the ensemble cast and I was excited to learn that we haven't heard the end of the Gold children. Michael Baron made his characters real. They are believable and best of all they aren't perfect! Some of my favorites are Deborah, Tyler and Sage (love that name). My least favorite was Corrina, and that's just because I wasn't fond of the type of person she was. She was extremely well written though and at times very punchable (to me at least). I cannot wait to learn even more about this family.

All in all I was extremely happy with this book and I'm so glad to have Michael Barons on my radar now. I will most definitely be reading more of his work.

My Rating: 4/5 Autumn Leaves

About the Author:

I grew up in the New York area and I’ve lived there my entire life. I worked in retail and taught high school English before I got my first book contract. I have gotten several additional book contracts since then, which is fortunate because I didn’t have the patience to work in retail and, while I quite enjoyed teaching, my approach was a bit too unconventional for most school systems. One school administrator told me that, “there are more important things than being a dynamic teacher.” Since I couldn’t name any of those things (at least in the context of school), I figured I didn’t have a long-term future in the profession. Hence, I became a writer, where I believe people appreciate a certain level of dynamism.

Though I started with nonfiction, I have always loved fiction and I have always wanted to write it. Since I can remember, I've had a particular affection for love stories. In fact, the very first book-length thing I ever wrote, when I was thirteen, was a love story. Mind you, it was the kind of love story that a thirteen-year-old boy would write, but it was a love story nonetheless. I have a deep passion for writing about relationships – family relationships, working relationships, friendships, and, of course, romantic relationships – and I can only truly explore this by writing fiction. These novels have given me a way to voice the millions of things running through my head.

My wife and kids are the center of my life. My wife is the inspiration for all of my love stories and my children enthrall me, challenge me, and keep me moving (and have served as the inspiration for several of the kids I've written about). One of the primary reasons I wrote my first novel, WHEN YOU WENT AWAY was that I wanted to write about being a father. Aside from my family, I have a few other burning passions. I’m a pop culture junkie with an especially strong interest in music, I love fine food (as well as any restaurant shaped like a hot dog), and I read far too many sports blogs for my own good.

I was born on the east coast and went to Cornell University. After college I worked as a writer for Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus. It was a fun first job and I learned how to write quickly, and also that when elephants sneeze on you it's very (VERY) messy. After a year in the circus, I moved out west. I lived in Aspen, Colorado where I skied as much as possible and worked as a waitress in a Mexican restaurant. Great experience but I learned that waitressing is hard (HARD) and I'm not very good at it.

After Aspen, I moved to San Francisco, California where I worked as a writer for University of California, San Francisco and wrote freelance for LucasFilm. At UCSF I learned that sitting in a cubicle under fluorescent lights dulls my soul. LucasFilm taught me that writing freelance, especially fiction, is fun (FUN). So I headed tograduate school in Boulder, Colorado to further hone my skills.

For the first part of my freelance writing career I wrote sport autobiographies. I'd visit and travel with an athlete like Monica Seles, Bela Karolyi, Nadia Comaneci or Apolo Ohno and then write their book. It was a terrific job, but after ten years and tons of incredible experiences I got tired of writing other peoples' stories and not my own.

I've always loved books with adventure, magic, and dark forces. I'm a huge fan of Stephen King, Peter Straub, Neil Gaiman, Suzanne Collins and George R.R. Martin. Those writers allow a reader to lose themselves in stories that are intense, sometimes other-worldly, yet strangely believable. I feel incredibly lucky that now I have the chance to create books for readers that will hopefully captivate and transport them into a world where the supernatural is possible with characters that they can relate to who are flawed yet totally compelling.

Today I live in the Pacific Northwest with my amazing husband, Henry, and our mostly loveable (but sometimes vorpal) Vizsla, Boone. When I'm not conjuring a story, I love to kite-board, bike, ski or plan adventures with Boone and Henry, who both make me laugh for different reasons and who are the best partners in fun a gal could ever imagine. (Bio taken from Nancy's website, which can be found here )

Interview:

What is the hardest part of the writing process?

Putting my butt in the chair. A lot of people tell me they have great ideas for books... and they do! But it's putting your butt in the chair for hour after hour, day after day, and continuing to write when you feel like playing with your dog, going for a run, meeting friends for coffee, that's hard! It's worth it, but it's hard:-)

Where is your favorite place to write?

I love writing in my house with my dog curled up at my feet.

Are you lucky enough to write full time or do you have a day job?

I am lucky enough to write full time. That wasn't always the case. I spent a decade writing other peoples stories - sport autobiographies, Star Wars trilogies, and various articles, plus a few years working for different companies. There isn't a day that I'm not thankful for the opportunity I now have to write what I love!

How do you handle negative reviews?

They hurt my feelings... and then I get over them. You just can't please everyone. Sometimes I want to write the person and explain that I spent two years writing the book they just trashed and I did it FOR readers to enjoy, NOT to torture them! Good intentions, you know? But that's why they make a zillion different flavors of ice cream - people need options and we all like different things.

If Pandora's Key was made into a movie who would you cast?

Brittany, I really want to know who YOU would cast!!! Who would play Evangeline, Olivia, Raphe, Dr. Sullivan and Malledy?

I'm still working on this...... :) Everyone that I have in mind is too old, I need to become more familiar with the younger generation of actors!

I can imagine Dakota Fanning as Evangeline... Naomi Watts as Olivia... Michael Pitt or Joseph Gordon Levitt as Dr. Sullivan.... and I'm not sure about Raphe or Malledy... maybe two unknown actors... what do you think?

What book is currently on your night stand? (At least, at the time of the interview)

'Where She Went' by Gayle Forman

Do you have any hobbies?

I'm a sporty gal. I love to kitesurf, ski, road bike, hike... anything outside. I also like to study French and dream of one day being fluent.

What are your favorite tv shows, past or present?

Hands down The Walking Dead!!!! Followed by Homeland, Justified, and Breaking Bad. I also loved Deadwood.

What are some of your favorite smells?

Vanilla. Orange blossoms. Freshly baked pies. Chocolate chip cookies. My husband right after he shaves.

Do you have any pet peeves?

Mean people. Pet owners who don't pick up their dog's poop (I have a dog so I can say this;-). Olives in any food I want to eat. Pickles. The word: moist.

Thank you so much Nancy for taking the time to answer my questions. If you haven't read it yet, give 'Pandora's Key' a try. And be on the lookout for 'The Key to Tartarus' (Book 2 of the Key Trilogy) which Nancy is currently hard at work on!
Phantom by Laura DeLuca

The “Phantom” was a musical phenomenon that Rebecca had always found enchanting. She had no
idea that her life was about to mirror the play that was her obsession. When her high school drama club
chooses “Phantom” as their annual production, Rebecca finds herself in the middle of an unlikely love
triangle and the target of a sadistic stalker who uses the lines from the play as their calling card.

Rebecca lands the lead role of Christine, the opera diva, and like her character, she is torn between her
two co-stars—Tom the surfer and basketball star who plays the lovable hero, and Justyn, the strangely
appealing Goth who is more than realistic in the role of the tortured artist.

Almost immediately after casting, strange things start to happen both on and off the stage. Curtains fall.
Mirrors are shattered. People are hurt in true phantom style. They all seem like accidents until Rebecca
receives notes and phone calls that hint at something more sinister. Is Justyn bringing to life the twisted
character of the phantom? Or in real life are the roles of the hero and the villain reversed? Rebecca
doesn’t know who to trust, but she knows she’s running out of time as she gets closer and closer to
opening night. Only when the mask is stripped away, will the twenty first century phantom finally be
revealed.

Excerpt

The orchestra tuned for its virtuoso, and Justyn stood
ready. But no one else was ready for the magical performance he began. Beside
her, Carmen was rambling on about something mundane. Rebecca elbowed her to
silence so she could listen to the perfectly thrilling tenor. As she listened
to the song unfold, the world around her started to slip away. Gone was the
high school auditorium. Gone were the rowdy teenagers. The Gothic stranger on
the stage had become the embodiment of Erik, and Rebecca watched him in all his
dark glory, belting out his tormented love through the words of his song. And
she was as breathless with wonder as Christine herself must have been when the
masked stranger serenaded her in the candlelit labyrinth of the opera house. In
that moment, Justyn wasn’t just portraying the phantom. Justyn was the phantom.

As he continued
to sing in his deep but somehow angelic voice, Rebecca found that she couldn’t
tear her eyes away from him. With every line, her heart began to beat
faster. She truly felt the arms of night
wrapping her in a warm embrace. She could almost feel the hands of the phantom
glide along her body as the words poured forth. The music caressed her. It
possessed her—mind, body and soul. Each word left her longing, yearning for
more.

She was gawking
so obviously, it was hardly surprising when Justyn felt her eyes on him and
steadily met her gaze. She realized her mouth was hanging open in stunned awe,
and she quickly snapped it shut. His lips moved into just a small hint of a

cheeks flush to the point that she felt almost feverish. But it wasn’t
embarrassment but excitement, arousal even, which was sending her mind spinning
in so many directions.

When the song
was over, and Rebecca had recovered just a hint of her composure, she couldn’t
help but burst into a healthy round of applause. A few scattered people joined
in, including Debbie and Carmen after she nudged them in the ribs. But only
Miss King seemed to truly appreciate the brilliance of his talent as much as
Rebecca did.

“That was

A few others

expression never faltered as he stepped down from the stage. He seemed almost

words of encouragement.

But not everyone
in the crowd was pleased as Justyn glided down the aisle, so ethereal in his
dark garments that he still resonated the spirit of the Opera Ghost. Miss King
might have been excited about the newest male addition to her cast after being
limited for many years, but Tom and his group of boisterous companions glared
at him as he passed them by. Jay sneered
and tossed a balled up piece of paper in Justyn’s direction, but the Goth was
quick, and caught it in his hand without missing a beat.

His speaking voice
was no less melodic than his singing voice, but something about his tone made
Rebecca shiver. He tossed the paper back at Jay, who was nowhere near as
coordinated as Justyn. He practically fell off his seat in his efforts to catch
it.

“Hey vampire,”
Tom called when Justyn went to walk away. “Are you sure you can handle the
competition?”

Justyn smiled, a
cool, sarcastic half-smile, and crossed his arms over his chest. “Are you?”

Miss King didn’t
notice the short confrontation, and Justyn vanished from the auditorium as
quickly and mysteriously as he had appeared. Only Rebecca had noticed the very
real tension between the two boys. She wondered if it was a bad omen for them
to start off the production with hard feelings and envy. That could only lead
to trouble. The kind of trouble that could end with someone getting hurt. The kind of trouble that
Rebecca would do
whatever it took to avoid.

Amanda was awesome enough to agree to an interview so let's get on with it shall we?

When you were younger what did you want to be when you grew up? Or did you always want to be a writer?

I actually wanted to be a vet for a really long time… until I realised blood was involved. After that I didn’t really have a set idea what I wanted to do until 18, which is when I had my first idea which grew and grew until I couldn’t hold it in anymore!

What is the first thing you ever wrote?

The Lands of the Hexagon House, which is being tinkered with and should be available before the Summer this year. I hope.

What do you find to be the hardest part of the writing process?

Motivation. Not because I don’t love it, but because I often want to go outside or watch TV in my pyjamas instead of sit at a desk and tune the world out. I am easily swayed to stop writing for things like sunshine and cake, which is bad bad bad.

Do you listen to music when you write? If so what are your 'soundtracks' like?

I do listen to music. I put together playlists for each book to help me get into the mood for a particular section. For The Dark Side of Night I listened to Closer by Kings of Leon a lot, Miserere by Allegri was my favourite to play when I imagined Cyan’s fighting scenes. In my head they were slow motion and beautiful to match the choir singing. I also listened to Snow Patrol - The City, Creed – My Own Prison and also Bon Iver – I Can’t Make You Love Me, a lot.

If you could be any character in any book, who would you be?

Clary Fray in The Mortal Instruments I think. Not just for her amazing powers, gorgeous red hair or brilliant best friend, but mainly because of Jace!

What book is currently on your nightstand?

Skulduggery Pleasant, Kingdom of the Wicked by Derek Landy. I absolutely love Skulduggery and Valkyrie Cain; they are the best and funniest magical crime fighting duo in my opinion. The books are bursting with awesome action and laugh out loud sarcastic humour, plus there are a lot of cool fights.

What are some of your favorite things or hobbies?

Practising Tae Kwon Do is my main hobby. Outside of that I read a lot, I like walking and painting. Mainly I just like to be out and about in the world, seeing what is happening and trying to learn as much as I can about this funny old life.

What are your some of your favorite t.v. shows, past or present?

One Tree Hill has been a firm favourite for a very long time. I loved Gilmore Girls. Currently I am super into New Girl, How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory. Past shows include British comedy Absolutely Fabulous and the British BBC version of Sherlock Holmes with Benedict Cumberbatch (sorry if you don’t know these ones!). I am also into Girls at the moment as the second series has just started here. Generally, I like a mix of soft girlie drama and comedies.

If you could invite any 3 people to dinner, who would you invite?

Beyonce because she is the ultimate strong, independent and amazing woman, and we could potentially plot to take over the world together, or maybe just discuss shoes and dancing. Brian Cox (Brit Physicist) for a lot of space and universe talk. Finally, I would invite Patrick Rothfuss because he is my favourite author and very clever and funny.

What can we expect from you next?

Next up is a middle grade fantasy adventure called The Lands of the Hexagon House, then after will be the follow up to The Dark Side of Night. After that? Who knows. I have a mighty long list of ideas, but I am betting whatever I go with will involve lots of magic and love; my two favourite things!

*Evie’s family has been holding out on her …

Big time.

On an unexpected visit to her grandparents’ house in New Hampshire’s secluded North Woods, the
sixteen-year-old literally runs into the truth of the long-hidden family secrets, and finds herself thrust
without warning into the clandestine world of the Great North Pack—a wild and exhilarating world of
rugged beauty, heart-pounding adventures, and long nights running under a sea of stars … but as she’s
set to discover, a world also fraught with potential dangers lurking in the shadows.
Praise
"Simply put, this book was amazing. I've read more fantasy novels than than I can count, but this
one is certainly one of the best. The heroine isn't some wishy-washy pansy that screams at everything,
and the focus of the story isn't on some unbelievably beautiful teenage girl who suddenly becomes
the biggest, baddest member of her species falling in love with some big, bad, sexy member of her
newfound species. It's about a girl becoming something she never knew existed, finding her place within
the pack family she values more than ever before, and an age-old feud that threatens everything she
loves." ~Morgan

Evangeline is turning 16. She's just gotten her first kiss, started having strange but eerily realistic dreams and received a birthday present that isn't quite what it seems. When Olivia, Evangeline's mother, is rushed to the hospital and later attacked there, Evangeline starts to learn about the family secret and the present she has been given. The key that can either save or destroy the world. What will she do with it?

Wow. This book was wonderful. I couldn't stop turning pages and before I knew it, I had finished.

There are two major players that we are introduced to and the story bounces back and forth between Evangeline and Malledy until their paths intersect. Evangeline is a typical teenaged girl going through her share of growing pains. I enjoyed her character, though I must admit that at times she seemed incredibly immature (even for a teenager) and I wanted to throttle her. I think that just shows how realistically she was written. Malledy is that character that you love to hate, at least he was for me. He is such a complex and intriguing character. I've got to say that I think Malledy is an awesome villain name. I try not to give spoilers in my reviews, but I mean come on, how can you NOT be a villain with a name like that? The secondary characters are equally well written and interesting and they round out the cast nicely.

The story flowed beautifully and my interest was piqued the entire time. The plot was fresh and creative. I loved the bit of Greek mythology that was thrown in, I kind of wished there was a little bit more! (Maybe in book 2?!?) I have to admit I was not sure I wanted to start another series as I am in the middle of a bunch of them right now. I'm so glad that I did though, the only bad part is having to wait for the second book to be released. I can't wait to find out where the author takes the story next.

* I was given a free copy of this book for review purposes. The review is based solely on my opinion and was not influenced by author or publisher.

My Rating: 4/5 stars

Oscar is a popular, yet seemingly normal guy who likes to hang out with his buddies and is studying to get into University. Cyan is completely complex and anything but normal. When Oscar stumbles into Cyan's 'world', his life is forever changed. Oscar must find a way to break through Cyan's tough outer shell and convince her to take him under her wing. There are things in this world that Oscar never knew existed and he's determined to learn more about them and how to kill them. After all, what he doesn't know could kill him and everyone else.

Let me start off with the story itself, I thought it was extremely interesting and enjoyable. It took me a little while to get used to the British vocabulary that the author (understandably) used. Once I got my head wrapped around that it was smoother sailing. There were a couple of minor editing errors but nothing that detracted from the story. One thing I did notice was that the author was quite loquacious and some of the scenes felt over written, if that makes sense. It's almost as if too much attention was paid to the smaller details. I did like the flow of the book, with alternating chapters based on the main characters. I think I would have preferred if the ending had stopped with Cyan's point of view instead of continuing on to Oscars, but it still worked.

Cyan is a strong character, she is well defined and I had no problem picturing her in my mind. I also related really well to her. I could absolutely imagine her loneliness and resulting aloofness. Oscar didn't come across as strong and he was a bit fuzzy in my mind. Maybe that's just because I didn't relate to him as well! The development of the relationship/friendship between Cyan and Oscar was engaging, although at times it did seem that Cyan was only interested in Oscar because of his aura and how it made her feel. That made me want to strangle her at times, but really you can't blame the girl for grasping at any good feelings that came her way.

Bonus- I loved how the title worked into the story!

Overall this was a unique read and a promising debut novel. I believe that the author has tremendous potential and I look forward to finding out what else Amanda Day has in store for us.

* I was given a free copy of this book for review purposes. ( If you would like to read or even re-read my review please click here) In addition to providing me with a review copy of 'Revamp', Beck was also gracious enough to grant me an interview!

Beck Sherman was born and raised in Massachusetts. Beck attended Syracuse University undergrad, has a master’s degree in photojournalism from the University of Westminster, London, and when not writing, enjoys exploring abandoned insane asylums and photo-documenting the things that go bump in the night, when they’re kind enough to pose. (bio provided by author)

Are you lucky enough to write full time or do you have a day job as well?

My day job is looking after my 19-month-old. I write when she’s sleeping.

When did you start writing?

I started writing in the womb. I wrote an epic novel about love, loss, and redemption over a span of nine months. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take it with me. It was way too big. I didn’t think ahead. After that, I wrote small-scale stories throughout my childhood. I come from a large Irish family - a family of storytellers that can spin tales from a routine trip to the supermarket.

What is the first thing that you ever wrote?

When I was around thirteen, I wrote a short, short story about a girl who goes on vacation with her family and is shown around the rental cottage by a caretaker with glowing red eyes. I think it was called “The Glowing Red Eyes” or something like that. Destined to be a bestseller.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

Starting and finishing. Not like I don’t appreciate the middle bits, but when you start a novel it’s like heading out on an adventure, and the end is like coming home.

Do you have any pet peeves?

Mean people. Bad drivers.

What book is currently on your nightstand?

Robopocalypse

If you could be any character in any book, who would you be?

Did you ever read “American Psycho” by Bret Easton Ellis? The main character, Patrick Bateman, has one hell of a good time. Just kidding. That’s a funny question for me because I read a lot of horror novels - a lot of victims and killers. Who wants to be a victim? Who wants to be a killer? Probably more appealing than being a victim but too messy, really. Dry cleaning costs would be exorbitant. I’d be the character that makes it to the happy ending. Wins the money. Gets the love.

What is your favorite tv show(s) past or present?

“Breaking Bad” and I do not appreciate this extended hiatus. Just saying. “Dexter,” of course. And “Girls” is a cool new show on HBO - in its second season.

If 'Revamp' was made into a movie who would you want cast?

Since “Revamp” has an extensive character list, here are a few...and I’ll be using my nifty time travel abilities to cast younger versions of a few actors. Okay, we’ll start with Emma. It’s a toss-up between Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence. I’ve seen them both in interviews and they’ve got that strange, quirky personality, like Revamp’s heroine. Cooper would be played by a younger Jake Gyllenhaal. In homage, Scott St. Martin would be played by Michael Biehn from “Aliens” and the first “Terminator.” One of my favorite actors, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, I think would be perfect as Charlie. A younger Michelle Rodriguez as Seven. Chris Evans as Rudy. Last but not least, Mabon would be played by either a younger Cillian Murphy, or possibly Ryan Gosling.
'Goodbye Nothing' is slated for release this May, can you tell us a little about it?

“Goodbye Nothing” is a new adult horror novel with a supernatural element about a nice guy, Cain Emmerick, who finds the fun in doing evil deeds after he’s the victim of a violent act. That’s about all I’m giving away at the moment. Oh, and there are a couple of unusual scenes in “Goodbye Nothing”...let’s just say I’m interested in seeing how people are going to react to them.

Nick Carter is a low level attorney at the firm Carter, Geller & Marks, working in the entertainment division. Unfortunately he is not related to the Carter the firm is named after, and even more unfortunately, shares an identical name with a Backstreet Boy. However it is being mistaken as a boy band member, which leads two extraterrestrials to his office at closing time asking for his help in a legal matter, and, uh... saving the world.

The universe is teeming with intelligent sophisticated life, and their culture and art forms outstrip most of what humanity can do. They have authors that make Shakespeare's works sound like Beavis and Butthead, architecture that makes the Taj Mahal, look like a beat down outhouse and the Mona Lisa look like monkey feces smeared on a wall.. The one thing we lowly humans have the edge over everyone else in the universe, is our musical ability. The title Year Zero refers to the first initial contact with our superior audio skills. A stray signal of the Welcome Back Kotter theme escaped into space, which caused some alien heads to explode from sheer delight. Literally.

So over the years, they have been recording our transmissions, obsessively listening, cataloging, debating, living and breathing Earth music. Then they took a closer look at our culture, and that's when the problem started. According to the rules of cultural sharing in the universe, an art form must adhere to an original culture's guidelines. For example, the species that created the finest stained glass in the universe, never used the color red, so practitioners of stained glass artwork never use red anymore. So when the rest of the universe delved into the cultural guidelines for Earth's recorded works that they have been gathering, discovering the pitfalls of intellectual property and copyright law:

“...that's when it hit them. They owed us an ungodly amount of money.”

So much money, that some alien factions think it would be better to just blow us up instead of bankrupting the whole universe.

This book was a great goofy romp through a comedic universe. The absurdity of the alien cultures and situations that our hero Nick finds himself in kept me chuckling to myself. The ridiculousness of the factual copyright laws of the music industry sprinkled into the book had me shaking my head in disbelief. It has a wide and wonderfully screwy cast of characters, and has a gleeful time sending up the music industry. A little thought provoking, and a bunch of funny. Pick this up if you get a chance.

Jason's rating: 4 Fame differential brain hemorrhages out of 5.

In the middle of nowhere is more like it! I just recently learned that The Great Gatsby was made into a movie (for the fifth time). I absolutely loved this book when I had to read it for high school English class. It's been a good long time since I've been in high school so I'm thinking that it may be time for a re-read.

The release date was originally set for Christmas Day 2012 but was pushed back and is now slated to be released on May 10, 2013 (U.S. release) . The trailer is interesting, but definitely seems exaggerated. I was originally very excited to learn of this movie, especially since it was coming out right before my birthday. After seeing the trailer, I'm not sure if I'll be seeing this movie at the theater or waiting until I can rent or get on Netflix.

Take a look for yourself and let me know what you think.
I know, I know I haven't figured out how to get the video to fit the parameters of my page. I'm working on it! :)
I hesitate to call this a new feature because I have yet to determine how often they will be posted. I do know that I have been neglecting short stories in my reading and there are some really good ones out there. I would like to start integrating more of them into the reading 'schedule' and giving them well deserved attention on the blog. I don't intend to review, just spotlight the stories. I would like to thank author, Mary C. Moore (click the link to be whisked to her website) for providing me with the short story that jump started Over in a Flash.

Extremely fun read! I was given a copy of this short story by the author. She was asking if I would review another book for her and noticed that I was a veterinary technician, she thought I would enjoy her short story. Boy, was she ever right. I could totally relate to the story and I found it both light-hearted and humorous. It is such a great little story that I think even readers that aren't in veterinary or animal related fields will enjoy it as well. My only complaint, I wish it was longer! I compare it to those Dessert Shooters at restaurants like Applebees. They are so yummy, but they are small and you just want there to be more.

If you need a refresher click HERE. Jason, writer of the review, has informed me that the movie has been green lighted for release in the U.S. All signs point to the release date being January 25, 2013. That's only 3 weeks away! Anyways, here is the trailer for your viewing pleasure.
Emma is on the trip from hell, or maybe it's the trip to hell. She just turned in her final paper and is heading out to the west coast to interview for grad school. People were acting a bit strange before she left, but Emma has no idea what's in store for her once her plane lands. She wakes up on an empty plane and the airport is empty, or is it? There doesn't appear to be anyone on the streets and when she finally does come across someone, there is something way off kilter about them. Thankfully she meets someone who resembles normal, but can she trust him? He seems to be making some outrageous claims. Little does Emma know, this is only the beginning.

This was a tremendous read! The characters are extremely well written and are both believable and easy to relate to. Emma is a fantastic female lead. She can be unsure of herself at times but she transforms into a take charge, not backing down kind of girl. I completely enjoyed the fact that she wasn't a helpless, clueless twit. Character development comes in the form of descriptive back stories for most of the major players. I only wish that Charlie had gotten a back story. The relationship between Emma and Cooper is handled perfectly, had it gone any differently it would have detracted from the story. The villain is fascinating and after getting into their history, I found myself sympathizing with them. Their actions are still vile and reprehensible but understandably so, if that makes any sense!

The plot is engaging and my interest was continually peaked throughout the tale. The account is mainly from Emma's point of view but there are some POV (and time frame) switches during the character back stories, which can in themselves be confusing. Not the way Beck Sherman writes it. It is completely reader friendly and eliminates any confusion. The ending is fantastic, it's a bit vague leaving the possibility for future works, but it provides enough closure for this to be a stand alone. There is also a fun cream-filled surprise!

I had heard some good buzz about this book before reading it and I have to say it was even better than I was expecting. Beck Sherman definitely does not disappoint, I cannot wait to read more!

*I was given a free copy of this book for review purposes. The review is based solely on my opinion and was not influenced by author or publisher.

My Rating: 4.5/5 stars
Britthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00313662819792024355noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-243597321028727185.post-10975550158207642732012-12-31T22:36:00.001-05:002012-12-31T22:36:30.176-05:00New year, new look, new goalsHappy New Year everyone! Well, almost anyways. I've decided that for 2013 I wanted the blog to have a new look and a new feel. It's not finished, there is still some tweaking to be done to the design and layout. What do you think so far? I'm also going to be way more organized and have a variety of different posts. I've got some ideas that I'm pretty excited about and I can't wait to get started on them.

Besides the blog renovation, I have some personal goals (resolutions, if you must) that I have in mind for myself as well.

Find a local organization where I can volunteer
Get back home to Chicago to visit
Eat healthier (which is so hard when you are financially strapped!)
Get active again (and hopefully more fit)
Make a dent in my TBR pile!

I set a goal for myself to read 60 books in 2012 and I just surpassed it with 67. I started off the year strong reading like 15 or 16 books in January but then my reading tapered off a bit. This year I'm going to try for 70 books. I'm not lacking for reading material, that's for sure.

What about you guys, what do you have planned for the upcoming year?

Here's to a happy and healthy 2013!!

I'm cheating here and using the synopsis from Goodreads as I didn't think I could summarize accurately (due to the scope of the story) and not give anything away!

A World Besieged, Lost in Darkness, Awaits a Champion... The Bloodwraiths. They are the most terrifying weapon at the command of King Arorahn: resurrected fallen soldiers, now undead, with superhuman abilities and an appetite for flesh. There is one defense against them - the Phoenix Strike, known only to the exiled Axendrei Knights. Gideon, a blacksmith's apprentice whose dreary life is illuminated by his devotion to his beloved, Crysta, has no idea what lies in wait for him when he is conscripted into King Arorahn's army. He doesn't know that his father, Hadrigahn, a fugitive Axendrei Knight, has been training him in secret, using a suppression spell to block Gideon's knowledge. On the eve of his conscription, Gideon learns there is to be a battle that Crysta and the other villagers plan to watch. Hoping to see his beloved one last time, Gideon sneaks away to watch ... not knowing that once his innocence has been broken by witnessing acts of grotesque violence, the spell on his mind will also break. Captured by the Bloodwraiths, Gideon is thrust into a world of gladiatorial combat. He must rediscover his true self, while guarding the secret of the Phoenix Strike, which has the ability to save his world. Will Gideon remember the truth of who he is, and regain the power to combine all aspects of his essence, which will give him the superhuman strength of an Axendrei Knight? And will Hadrigahn succeed in training a group of fledgling Knights to battle the Bloodwraiths rampaging across the land? Sons of Titan: Rise of the Bloodwraiths is the stunning epic opening volume of a series that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Join Gideon on his quest, and prepare to be enthralled from the first page to the last.

This book took me over a month to get through which is unheard of for me. If I'm struggling to get through a book I will give it two or three tries at most and then I throw the towel in. That's just it, I wasn't struggling through Sons of Titan, there was just so much going on in the book that I needed to take my time. There are several characters to get familiar with. There are also a number of smaller stories that tie in to the bigger picture. I almost feel that 'Sons' could have been divided up into at least two novels. Even though there was a lot going on, I really enjoyed the story. It was very entertaining, and kept my interest throughout. I was definitely invested and genuinely cared what happened to the characters. There was an Arthurian feel to the book in the beginning and I picked up on a couple of biblical references as well. Now whether those were real or imagined....that's the question.

One element that I found confusing was the passage of time. Certain paragraph breaks and new chapters made it difficult to determine where on the time line I was. There were also some minor editing concerns (at least in my version) but nothing so drastic that it took away from the story.

I do have two suggestions that may help readers clarify certain aspects of the story:

1. a map of the areas involved in the story shown somewhere in the book

2. a complete list of characters (with descriptions) for the reader to refer to

I am excited to find out what's next for this cast of characters and look forward to seeing more from this author.

I'm going to start integrating more of Jason's reviews because he and I have different tastes when it comes to reading and that will provide you (my wonderful followers) with reviews for a larger variety of genres. Jason also does music reviews on his blogs (check out the links above) if you care to take a peek.

Ok you know that whole “recommended for you” section on Amazon? Within this advertising assault on my wallet was a blurb for a $0.99 self-published titled This Book Does Not Exist by Mike Schneider. The title and the cover depicting a Polaroid style photo with the eyes and mouth obscured by what looked like a vandal's marker intrigued me. Plus, it was cheaper than the 44oz Diet Pepsi at the local gas station, so what the hell.

This book is your standard 20-something love story. Boy meets girl, boy starts long distance relationship with girl, boy loses girl in alternate dimension which then spills out into our reality inadvertently causing WWIII.

Ok maybe it's not that standard.

The story starts off with a first person account of how the author met a girl named Naomi (by the way, witnessing a suicidal idiot jump off a roof together is not a great omen for romantic success) and continues on for the first ten percent of the book detailing the troubles and tribulations of trying to get on the same page. When finally Naomi agrees to move into the author's apartment in L.A. (he's a struggling screenwriter), he goes to meet her at the airport and she doesn't get off the plane. Worse, she doesn't answer her phone, and anyone the author texts, Facebook messages, or tweets about it has no idea either. Then a few days later he gets a friend request from a mysterious gentleman named Geppeto W with the message: “I can help you find Naomi, but not unless you come to Ohio.” Which happens to be where the couple grew up.

Geppetto turns out to be the keeper of something called The Door, which I type in bold here because The Door for some reason is always typed in bold in the book. The Door appears for people when they “are falling in or out of various stages of love”. Seems like Naomi had some doubts and wandered through, and Geppetto found her suitor to test his resolve about the relationship. Thus begins a whole bunch of screwy scenarios involving the author trying to find Naomi, or find out if he's even really in love with her, or find out if he's just been slipped some really bad hallucinogens.

The book has some really interesting concepts about perception and reality, and had at one point a really interesting e-book technique of breaking down the “fourth wall”, where the author/protagonist talks about posting a YouTube video, and instead of describing it, the link for the video is right there on the page, just a finger tap away on my Kindle Fire. These technical and conceptual ideas however, are sadly more thought out than any emotional storytelling or character development. The author always drops cultural references in the story. What music he's listening to, or movies he's seen, as if what a person likes is the same as what a person is like. Also I wish the nightmare scenarios of The Door were more creative and tied to the character's past, but instead the author uses some recent historical incidents as a backdrop. I can only guess this was done as a way to make us identify with the character and recognize what he's going through, but it feels to me as a lost opportunity to define the character more.

Overall it was an interesting book, but nothing to really rave about. It was a great idea, but a great idea does not make a great story. Whatever door the author decides to go through next, I can only hope he decides to take a different hallway.

Two red-white-and-blue Bic lighters out of five.

Britthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00313662819792024355noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-243597321028727185.post-16937974984845140432012-11-14T11:05:00.001-05:002012-11-14T11:11:49.292-05:00Gratitude Giveaway Hop
